She was a stay-at-home mom who loved to cook and bake. There is not a time in my life when I can recall that she didn’t have cookies or a pie in the oven. She had to quit school in the 9th grade to take care of her younger sister, when her mom fought a battle with breast cancer. She was a take-charge kind of person who took great pride in taking great care of people. One way of showing how much she loved us was through food. Meals usually ended with dessert and she made the best. Back in those days, YouTube didn’t exist. My mom learned by buying many cake decorating books (mostly by Wilton) and stayed up at night after we all went to bed to practice.
She became good friends with an elderly couple in New Iberia who owned a bakery. Although she never worked for them, she developed a bond with the couple through a shared love of baking. When the couple was ready to retire, their children were not interested in carrying on the family business. So, they approached my mom and asked if she would want to buy the bakery (recipes and equipment included). I was only 7-years-old at the time, but can still remember her excitement.
She was advised by this couple, who had run a bakery for more than 50 years, to find and stick to one thing - the thing she loved the most. And, of course, my mom’s first love was cake. And to this day, cake is what we do.
We make cakes for any occasion: weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, Baptisms, graduations, and all holidays. We have made cakes for grand openings, divorces, and even “Happy Adoption Day” cakes. My favorite is “Happy Gotcha Day” for new family pets. Guidry’s is a happy place where people come to add something sweet to a day that is already special.
Guidry’s is unique because our cakes are not from a box mix. We still do things the old-fashioned way, by sifting the flour and measuring all ingredients one-by-one. The icings are also made in this special way. The original technique of this food art is still done in a timeless fashion that hasn’t compromised the quality of our product for 100 years.
